The SmartProducts project developed the scientific and technological foundation for creating “smart products” with embedded “proactive knowledge.” These products assisted customers, designers, and workers in managing the increasing complexity and variety of modern products. They used proactive knowledge to communicate and cooperate with humans, other products, and the environment. This knowledge included details about the product itself, its environment, and its users, while also containing workflows and interaction knowledge to engage in multimodal dialogues. Smart products were designed to “talk,” “guide,” and “assist” users. Some knowledge was co-created with the product, while other parts were gathered during its lifecycle using embedded sensors and communication tools. The project primarily impacted the consumer goods, automotive, and aerospace industries
