About
The Xtreme Webcasting project demonstrated the use of cutting-edge mobile and satellite technologies to broadcast remarkable events in real time. Starting in 2002 with a mountaineer’s ascent of the Matterhorn, the project featured live reports sent via mobile devices to KMi’s lab, allowing global audiences to follow along through a dynamic, multimedia website. Over the years, similar broadcasts covered expeditions to peaks such as Everest and Lhotse, enhancing remote viewer interaction with live and archived content including voice messages, photos, and GPS data. The project showcased the potential for webcasting to create immersive experiences from the world’s most challenging environments.
