WebOnto was developed as a Java applet integrated with a customised web server, enabling users to browse and edit knowledge models online. Initially part of the PatMan, HCREMA, and Enrich projects, it later became a public service and was utilised in the PlanetOnto and ScholOnto projects. The platform was designed to facilitate the sharing of ontologies on the web.

WebOnto at The Open University summaries and insights into a wide array of projects spanning the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Each project summary is crafted to provide an overview of objectives.

The 1998 paper below has 470 citations as this work was ahead of its time. Before the invention of wiki or crowd sites WebOnto allowed researchers to build ontologies (a key component of Google Search today) collaboratively over the web.
