About
Business Process Management (BPM) focused on managing IT-supported business operations from a business expert’s process view, rather than a technical perspective. The motivation for BPM was the need for organisations to continuously align their running business processes, executed within multiple heterogeneous systems, with processes required by business needs. However, current tools offered limited automation and were hindered by the heterogeneity of legacy systems implementing those processes. Additionally, process representations were not accessible to machine reasoning, preventing the querying of processes for compliance with regulations.
The SUPER project aimed to develop a technological platform to manage business processes in a scalable and semantically interoperable manner. It combined Semantic Web Services (SWS) technology with BPM to provide a framework for the automated discovery, substitution, composition, and execution of business process implementations. SUPER demonstrated the effective deployment of SWS in large-scale applications in the telecommunications industry. The project delivered horizontal ontologies to describe business processes, vertical telecommunications-oriented ontologies for domain-specific annotations, and a suite of tools based on the SEKT and DIP projects.
