About
The SUbTLE project built on the outcomes of two EU projects: the CIPHER project by the Knowledge Media Institute (KMi) and the MOBIlearn project by the Institute of Educational Technology (IET) UserLab. The CIPHER project produced tools for exploring annotated digital resources, while MOBIlearn developed models for mobile learning content design. SUbTLE aimed to build educational tools to facilitate learning in mobile contexts.
Three main activities were undertaken in the SUbTLE project. First, the OU communications group developed a web portal for visitors from other academic institutions to present OU’s approach to distance education using personalized presentations. Second, the OU’s MSc course on Open and Distance Education (H802) introduced the concept of the semantic web, where students used the Mobile Information Service from CIPHER as a case study. Lastly, the project explored the use of mobile phones for learning at Bletchley Park, assessing their pedagogical benefits for museums and heritage centers.
