The Semantic Web and Web Services transformed the Internet from a network of information to a network of knowledge and services. The number of services offered online was expected to rise dramatically in the following years. The European Union defined its vision for the future internet of 2015, emphasising the importance of software services and semantics.

Service Web 3.0 aimed to address these emerging developments and contributed to the implementation of framework programs and related projects while supporting future community research and technological development. It focused on defining the software service agenda of the future by contributing to the EU’s Future Internet initiative and produced roadmaps to plan and coordinate community activities.

Service Web 3.0 set up dedicated cross-project clusters focusing on Semantic Web Services within STI International and exploited synergies through networking and cross-fertilisation with other related research projects. It supported standardisation activities for semantic service descriptions, organised specialised conferences and seminars, and provided informational materials like white papers and feasibility studies to raise awareness of the technology in industry, introduce new business models, and facilitate the adoption of Semantic Web Services and technology, particularly for SMEs.
