About
The NeOn Toolkit was an ontology engineering environment originally developed as part of the NeOn Project and later supported by the NeOn Foundation, along with other related technologies.
As an advanced, open-source, multi-platform tool, the NeOn Toolkit provided comprehensive support for the ontology engineering life cycle. Built on the Eclipse platform, a widely used development environment, it offered an extensive set of 45 plug-ins covering various ontology engineering tasks, including annotation, documentation, development, knowledge acquisition, management, modularisation, ontology evaluation, reasoning, and reuse.
The primary goal of NeOn was to enhance the use of ontologies in large-scale semantic applications within distributed organisations. Specifically, the NeOn Toolkit aimed to improve the handling of multiple networked ontologies, which existed within specific contexts, were collaboratively created, and were often highly dynamic and evolving.
The NeOn Toolkit was one of the key outcomes of an Integrated Project funded by the European Commission’s Sixth Framework Programme (grant number IST-2005-027595), involving 14 European partners.
The last developed version of the toolkit was NeOn Toolkit v2.5.2.
