About
FLOR was a folksonomy enrichment algorithm that automatically enhanced user-generated tags by utilising existing knowledge sources, such as online ontologies indexed in the Watson Semantic Web Gateway and WordNet, without the need for training data. It took a tagspace of user-generated tags as input and produced a semantic layer that described the concepts of the tags and their relationships.
The increasing popularity of Web 2.0 and folksonomies resulted in a vast amount of tagged data, but resource retrieval was limited due to the lack of semantic understanding of the tags. The hypothesis proposed that enriching folksonomies with formal semantics from online ontologies could significantly improve content retrieval. FLOR was a technique developed to automatically enrich folksonomy tags with semantics extracted from online ontologies and other background resources, such as thesauri.
exFLORe
exFLORe was a query expansion algorithm designed to improve folksonomy search by utilizing the semantically enriched tagspaces produced by FLOR. Traditional folksonomy searches were limited to matching search keywords with resource tags or descriptions. For instance, a query like “europe lake” would only return resources tagged with both keywords. exFLORe aimed to enhance this by expanding the search through the enriched tagspaces.
