The Environmental Management programme offered a range of modules leading to a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, or Masters degree. It focused on people, their decisions, and actions that impacted the environment, rather than being solely about the ‘environment.’

The programme was designed with various professional activities and occupations in mind. It was relevant to those working in environmental management and related fields like health and safety or quality management. Regardless of background, it expanded knowledge of environmental management in business, the public sector, and other organisations, helping students develop decision-making skills on environmental issues at work, in the community, or at home.

Students in the programme joined thousands annually to study through the OU’s supported open learning model, available in the UK, across Europe, and beyond. Modules were delivered through a combination of online and printed materials, supported by online forums and resources, with guidance from an OU tutor.

Who is it for ?

The Environmental Management (EM) Programme was designed for individuals aiming to understand and manage environmental impacts, including those involved in sustainability, policy planning, or environmental systems management. Participants typically came from industries like local government, commerce, and NGOs. A prior degree was usually required, although alternatives were available. Modules took about 12 hours per week over six months. The programme was available worldwide, with some restrictions on optional modules for students outside the UK/Europe. Strong English skills and the ability to analyse and apply concepts were essential for success.

Benefits

The Environmental Management postgraduate programme was designed to help students and organizations improve environmental management and decision-making. It allowed participants to take on new roles, use tools for assessing environmental performance, and work towards certifications like ISO 14001. The flexible structure enabled students to study without interrupting their careers, with multiple start dates and online support. Employers could sponsor students by covering fees, providing mentorship, or offering access to company resources. This approach facilitated personal development while applying new skills in the workplace.
