About
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded the AKT project as one of their Interdisciplinary Research Collaborations (IRC). AKT brought together a strong consortium of universities and complementary disciplines to address fundamental problems in knowledge management. It was a multi-million pound, six-year collaboration between renowned research groups at the Universities of Southampton, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Sheffield, and the Open University. Professor Nigel Shadbolt served as the Director of the AKT project, which aimed to develop and extend technologies for the capture, modelling, publishing, reuse, and management of knowledge. The IRC conducted fundamental research in knowledge technologies and produced practical results, attracting significant industrial support.
The project tackled the challenge of managing the vast amount of data, information, and knowledge in modern society. It focused on how to efficiently and effectively transform knowledge from its creation to its use. This process involved acquiring, modelling, representing, storing, retrieving, using, reusing, publishing, and maintaining knowledge. The AKT project aimed to address these issues through an integrated approach and focused its research agenda on overcoming six key challenges in knowledge management.
