The Seven Summits map colour

On January 2nd, 2009, Lorenzo Gariano reached the summit of Vinson Massif, completing the Seven Summits challenge and becoming only the third Italian to achieve this feat, following Reinhold Messner and Giuseppe Pompili.

Lorenzo had set out to climb the highest mountain on each of the seven continents, a challenge accomplished by fewer than 100 people at the time. While his determination and skill enabled him to conquer six peaks, securing funding for the final climb proved to be one of the biggest obstacles. After personally financing his first four expeditions, he sought sponsorship to support his ascent of Vinson Massif in Antarctica.

His journey had already gained attention through newspaper articles, magazine features, and BBC Radio Northampton interviews. He offered potential sponsors media exposure, with their names and logos featured in photos, interviews, and broadcasts as the challenge progressed. Additionally, he proposed linking the climb to charitable fundraising.

Lorenzo viewed this adventure as more than a personal goal—it was a chance to share the emotions, dreams, and experiences that came with such a unique and demanding endeavour.
