The LUISA project was a STREP initiative under the European Commission’s 6th Framework Programme. It applied the semantic web service framework, architecture, and tools developed through the DIP project, including IRS-III, to the field of eLearning. LUISA aimed to create a flexible infrastructure for the development and reuse of learning materials for both learners and educators. The enhanced architecture enabled new possibilities in automating the discovery, selection, composition, and negotiation of learning objects within distributed service architectures integrated through ontologies. The project’s long-term goal was to shift the eLearning paradigm from learning objects to semantic web services. As such, LUISA can been seen as a relatively early application of AI to teaching and learning.

The project involved several participants, including Atos Origin S.A.E (ATOS), the University of Alcalá de Henares (UAH), the University of Uppsala (ULL), KMi from the Open University (OU), the University Henri Pointcaré (UHP), Giunti Interactive Labs (GIUNTI), and EADS Corporate Research Centre (EADS).
